I can't see Japanese characters on my computer!

You'll need to set up your computer if you don't have the fonts available to display Japanese characters.

Windows user will find Declan's Guide to Installing and Using Microsoft's Japanese IME an excellent reference.
Ubuntu users can follow the official guide.
Japanese fonts and input should 'just work' on OS X. If it doesn't, try Christopher Bolton's Japanese for Your Mac guide.

How do I find a lesson?

Tag search:

All lessons require to be tagged with at least one tag. Tags are a good way to specify what the lesson contains. To search for a lesson by tag, simply start typing in the Tag Search box on the Find page. If you type a partial tag and wait for a second, a list of tags containing your search word will appear, simply clicking one of the tags that show up will display the related lessons.

Generic search:

Lesson items and other content can be searched using the Generic Search box on the Find page. This is a good way to find which lessons contain a specific word.

Tagging rules
  • Tags can only use the English alphabet and numerics (A-Z 0-9)
  • Tags should be meaningful -- Do not add your name as a tag
  • Anyone can add a tag to a public lesson, only the author or moderators can remove tags
  • Tags that do not benefit the public will be removed or renamed
What is the perceived difficulty rating?

The perveived difficulty rating shown on the lesson details page shows the average correct percentage of all users who have taken a graded lesson. This scale moves from left (green) to right (red) with green being "easy" and red being "difficult."

For example, if 10 users have taken a lesson and have all scored 80% or more, the perceived difficulty of the lesson is low, or "easy." On the other hand, if the users consistantly score in the lower range, the perceived difficulty would be higher, or "difficult."
How do I change the font size in a lesson?

Once in a lesson, you can click the text size buttons to change the text size of the question and answers.

The largest "A" button will increase the size by 2 points. The smallest "A" button will decrease the size by 2 points. The middle button will return the text size to the normal size.

You can change the size as many times as you need during the lesson, however, the size you end a lesson with will be the size the next lesson starts with.

How do I use flash cards for a lesson?

On the lesson details page, you will have the option to use the lesson question and answers in flash card format. To being the lesson with flash cards, simply select what should be on the front of the card (question or the answer) and then click the Start Lesson as flash cards link. The question and answer set will be randomized each time, just like the multiple choice option.

To navigate through the cards, you can click the card control links on the right side of the page, or use your keyboard. Shortcuts are: F = flip the card, G = move to the next card and D = move to the previous card. The easiest way to progress through the stack is to use the F key to flip once, then the G key to move to the front of the next card.

Once you hit the end of the stack, a message will appear letting you know. You can then click the End Lesson link to go back to the lesson details page, or just hold down the D key to get to the beginning of the stack.

There is no summary screen at the end of the flash card stack, but as soon as you reach the end, the time is recorded for your history report.

Why would a lesson not have a multiple choice option?

If a lesson has been created without specifying filler answers, the option for multiple choice will not be available. However, all lessons with at least a question and answer can be consumed as flash cards.

How do I share my lessons?

Once you've created a lesson, make sure to set the "Lesson is public" option in the Lesson information page. This will allow other users to view the lesson.

As a registered user, you also have your own web address which contains only your public lessons. The link is viewable in the account page.

What are these icons on my public lessons?

To help you easily identify lessons you made public, there are two different icons which appear in two different places.

In the main Find page, your public lessons will be marked with , in the Your Lessons page, a world icon will be shown.

Briefly hovering your mouse over the lesson name of your public lessons will also popup a short message saying the lesson is public.

So, people can provide feedback directly to me?

Yes, the option is available. You can choose to get email feedback from users of your lesson in the Accounts page. The option is turned off by default.

Users will not see your email address. The contact form uses the email address you used to sign up to send feedback. The email will be coming from the PracticeJapanese.com domain.

It's advisable that you allow users to provide feedback on your public lessons. If you decide not to allow for feedback, users will be instructed to use the main contact form when inaccuracies are found. If we get multiple complaints, we will revert the lesson back to private.

How can I format my question text?

There are three types of font stylizations you can use: bold, italics and underline. There is also two variations of an empty box element you can add into your questions. To add stylized text, you can simply select your text and click on either the B (bold), I (italics) or U (underline) icons next to the question text box.

The box elements, short box and long box can be included by clicking the (short box) and (long box) icons without text selected. The boxes are a great way to write a fill-in-the-blanks question.
